STORAGE CONVERSION TO A CLOAKROOM. Welcome to my October Wednesday Bloggy. These bloggies are intended to answer your interior design issues and they resemble design consultations.
I was asked if it’s possible to transform a storage space into a cloakroom (toilet and wash basin only). This is a fantastic question!
Based on the floor plan I’ve got, the area is smaller than the standard requirement. The UK standard requires a minimum of 700mm by 1300mm for a small toilet. This storage is 820mm by 1020mm. When planning a bathroom, one has to take into account the plumbing, which goes behind the scenes and takes extra space. In most cases plumbing is hidden from the view, it looks nicer that way. However, sometimes blocking off any pipes takes extra space which has to be taken into account. In the illustrations I show two most common toilet types: a standard and a wall-hung toilet. Which one will be used sometimes depends on the available space. Both require extra space for the cistern and soil pipe. I.e. Extra space behind the toilet and under the floor level. The soil pipe must be installed on the slope. These factors have to be planned for, and can visually change the design. There is already a drain pipe, in the middle off the back wall.
I show two options in the illustrations: The 1st option which may work with some structural changes, but at the moment the layout doesn’t work. The dimensions would have to be checked on site. The 2nd option is out of question as there is not enough space in front of the toilet.
A good bathroom, or an extra cloak room in this case is always an added value to any property. And because of this it is important that plumbing especially and technical aspect is done properly. I understand that my follower was hoping for a different answer. To make this work it would require some structural changes, more work which automatically increases the costs.
